Gaziantep's only master of the finials M. Yaşar Kervancıoğlu, 81, has taken over his profession from his ancestors for 71 years, has his workplace around the historic Bakırcılar Bazaar.

Kervancıoğlu, who produces finials as the 13th generation in his shop he inherited from his father, is working intensively to respond to the demands of the finials for accessories, while continuing to make the finials for minarets.

Kervancıoğlu stated that the copper finials placed at the highest point of the minarets and placed among the important sections have started to be used as accessory materials in the houses and work places in recent years. He said that his work benefited him from both the material and the spiritual side.

Kervancıoğlu said that he made all the finials where “Allah” and “Muhammad” and the “crescent” forms on it with laboriously, “I was producing what I could from copper since I was a child. But now I am old enough. I cannot much get in details. I usually produce finials now.”

“Thousands of finials decorate mosques”

Kervancıoğlu, who started his career at the age of 7, said: “I have been doing my job and producing finials for years. This work is also can be done with casting technique but this is a bit of easy work. I have made thousands of finials in my life and these finials are decorating a lot of minarets in Turkiye.” (İbrahim Koçyiğit - ILKHA)
