Speaking in the US, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, “For the visitation of German troops, they want defectors back,” said in a statement he made about the Incirlik crisis with Turkiye.

During his visit to Washington, Gabriel spoke at the Center for Strategic and International Studies [CSIS] and gave detailed information about the incirlik talks with Turkiye on Incirlik.

Gabriel, who gave detailed information for the first time about the number of asylum seekers in Germany, said, “About 450 asylum seekers have been granted. Right to asylum is given to 80 people. Now the Turkish government wants us to extradite these people to Turkiye for imprisonment. This is a blackmailing NATO ally to another NATO ally. It is certainly not possible.”

It was stated that some 40 FETO members military officers working in NATO bases have been granted asylum to Germany after the coup attempt on July 15th. Secretary of Defense Fikri Işık stated that “we are expecting from Germany that these asylum applications are not evaluated definitely and that the members of FETÖ are extradite to Turkiye.”

It was known that Zekeriya Öz and Celal Kara, who are important names in the judicial branch of FETO, were also staying in Germany. Despite all the demands of Turkiye, these names had not been extradited.

On June 2, 2016, Germany was not allowed to visit German troops in Incirlik after the 1915 events were described as 'genocide' by the Bundestag. These developments have caused the cold winds between Turkiye and Germany.

Lastly, relations between Germany and Turkiye, which resisted refusing to extradite the asylum-seeking FETOs, were severely hampered. German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said of the latest developments:

“The Erdoğan government told us, ‘if you extradite those who are involved in asylum, yes, then your MPs may visit German troops.’ This is the violation of our laws and Constitution, such a thing is forbidden.”

Gabriel criticized to Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who said “If Germany wants to get out of Incirlik, it is their business, we will not beg them.”

US is on for Incirlik crisis

“I am very pleased that US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and others have promised to forward the message to Erdoğan," said Gabriel, who expressed his willingness to address the issue at the NATO summit with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

NATO dimension of Incirlik tension

Reminding that the German Federal Army is under the supervision of the Federal Parliament, not the Federal Government, the German troops serve in the Assembly of Konya and İncirlik with the decision of the Bundestag, Gabriel stated that the issue is not limited to only the Turkish-German bilateral relations.

“The AWACS are in Konya, a NATO mission, not a mission based on Turkish-German bilateral cooperation,” Gabriel said. (Mustafa Kaynak - ILKHA)
