Chinese Ambassador to Washington Cui Tiankai said that the international trade rules cannot be made only by the United States or China, in a statement made at the reception held for the "Lunar New Year".

Cui Tiankai said that the cooperation between China and the United States is expected to continue in the Donald Trump era, said that the general trend in China-US cooperation cannot be reversed, though Trump administration has not yet formulated China's policy. Although the Trump administration has yet to formulate its China policy, the general trend of China-U.S. cooperation cannot be reversed as it is "the only right choice" for both countries, said Cui Tiankai on the sidelines of a Lunar New Year reception at the Chinese Embassy.

Tiankai expressed his wish for the two sides to continue their dialogue and contact mechanisms at different levels; he added that the joint efforts made to develop new types of relations based on cooperative non-conflict, non-contradiction, mutual respect and win-win co-operation have brought concrete progress.

On the other hand, Tiankai noted that cooperation in different fields such as trade, finance, security, energy, infrastructure and mutual investment can be deepened, he said, adding that mutually beneficial parties wish to open up new areas of cooperation.

On the South China Sea issue, Cui emphasized that it is only a dispute on territorial and maritime rights between China and certain ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) members, rather than a geopolitical competition between China and the US.

Asked about the China-U.S. trade frictions, Cui said China is firmly opposed to fighting a trade war with the U.S. side because both will suffer as a result.

On the decision by the Trump administration to quit the Transpacific Trade Partnership (TPP), Cui refuted the notion that China will take over the U.S. role as the global leader who makes the rules of trade in the future.

"I think this is a misleading notion, because international trade rules cannot be made by the United States or China alone, and rather, they should be made and implemented by all nations in the world," Cui said. (ILKHA)
