Ninety-seven-year-old Besi Karakurt, who lives with her daughter and grandchildren in Gaziantep, criticized the placement of the elderly in the resting home today and stated that the resting home is the own-self home.

In Turkiye, there are 19 thousand 818 elderly people, including 13 thousand 159 people who are affiliated to the Ministry of Family and Social Policy and 6 thousand 659 people in private resting homes. While respecting old people is a sign and a demonstration of respect for Allah, the raise of rest homes attracts attention in a country whose majority are Muslims.

In Gaziantep, Besi Karakurt lives with her daughter Emine Durmaz (62) and her grandchildren Müslüm-Hacer Karakurt, said that the elders were the most precious treasures of the society and told her century-old experiences to the microphone of ILKHA.

Besi Nine, who has 8 children's mothers and 170 grandchildren, was originally from Şanlıurfa but said she is staying with her daughter and grandchildren in Gaziantep for constant treatment. Expressing that the daughter and her grandchildren were looking after her, Besni said that today many of the elderly are not valued and they are thrown into rest homes.

Granny Besi, who has almost toppled a century, has been puzzled by many diseases for years, but despite her aging and astonishment, she does not disrupt her worship in any way. Besni, who said that she did not neglect the five-day prayer, stated that she had read al-Qur’an, the salvation to Prophet Muhammad [PBUH], and read surahs she had memorized from her memory.

"We used to know the value of old people very well"

Granny Besi stated that the value of elder people are not like old times and none is respecting to old people anymore and added, 'Will they not get old when they get to day?' Complaining about the abandonment of the elderly to their resting homes by their own children, she said:

"I have close to 170 grandchildren. I got married when I was 15. 3 children died. A son and my 4 daughters are alive. Now they serve me. Thank Allah I am not a complainer. Now the world has changed a lot. The value of old people are not taken like the old days. We used to know the value of old people very well. But now they do not even accept elders."

"It will be a blessing in the house where the old people are"

Emine Durmaz, indicating it is not right to throw elders into rest homes that elderly people are a source of plentifulness in a house and added, "If old people are in a house, it will be a blessing in that house. The old elders’ prayer is always acceptable. If we keep old people in rest home, we cannot even see the face of paradise. We certainly cannot accept the elderly being thrown into the resting homes. When day comes, we will age. We should think about our end and act accordingly." (ILKHA)
