In 2016, TURKSTAT shared its findings on the life style and value judgments of the families.

In order to gather information about the values of individuals' life styles and family values, Family Structure Survey was conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) in cooperation with the Ministry of Family and Social Policies in 2016. As a result of the research, the statistics were given in the Region Units Classification Level and in three major provinces of Istanbul, Ankara and İzmir.

The research provided important information about divorce and marriage. It is seen that 37.5 percent of the first marriages are in the age range of 20-24 years while the highest divorce rate in Turkiye is 50.9 percent with irresponsible and irrelevant behaviors.

17.9 percent of first marriages happened before the age of 18

When the first marriage ages who have experienced marriage declare in the survey are examined; It is seen that 37.5 percent of the first marriages in Turkiye were made in the age range of 20-24 years. After this age range, the first marriages took place at the age of 25-29 with a maximum of 21.2 per cent and before the age of 18 to 17.9 per cent.

When the first marriage age is examined according to gender; it was seen that women and men made their first marriages at a maximum age of 20-24 years. The proportion of women who made their first marriage between 20-24 years was 34.3 percent, compared to 41.3 percent for men. The proportion of women who married before the age of 18 was 28.2 percent and the proportion of men was 5.6 percent.

The best age for first marriage for men was 25-29 with 53.9 percent

When examines the age at which the first marriage is deemed appropriate for men and women; the most suitable age for marriage for women is 46.9 per cent between the ages of 20-24, 53.9 per cent for men between the ages of 25-29.

59.9 percent of the first marriages were realized with prearranged marriage

When it is examined how individuals with marriage experience make a choice of spouse; 47.8 percent of the first marriages in the country were seen with prearranged marriage and with own free will, 12.1 percent by prearranged marriage and without asking their decision but with family members' own opinion. The proportion of those who choose their spouse with the decision of family was 30.2 percent, the proportion of marriages with their own decisions but out of family’s decision was 2.5 percent, and the proportion of elope marriages with spouse was 7 percent.

When examined married couples according to the gender how they got married with their spouse; the proportion of women and men who married with prearranged marriage and with their own decision was 47.8 per cent, the proportion of women married with the family sentence out of her decision was 14.8 per cent and that of men was 9 per cent. The proportion of women who choose husbands with their own decision and the expectation of their families is 27.1 percent, the proportion of men is 33.8 percent, the proportion of married women out of family’s decision is 2.6 percent and the proportion of men is 2.5 percent.

When examined married according to their education status; it was seen that as the education level of the individuals increased, the proportion of those who married with their own choice increased, while the proportion of those who married with prearranged marriage decreased.

The percentage of those who have both official and religious marriages was 97.1 percent

When the type of marriage that the individuals perform in their marriage is examined; it was seen that 97.1 percent of the individuals made both official and religious marriages. Only 1.8 percent of those who made official weddings, and 1.1 percent who only engaged in religious weddings.

Spouses had the most problems with home-related responsibilities

When married individuals are examined with their spouse in some designated issues, it was seen that the most problematic issue among the spouses was the responsibilities related to the home with 5.9 percent. Not spending time with the family was the most problematic which is the 5.4 percent and the 5.3 percent smoking habit, respectively. The least problematic issues among the spouses were the entertainment habits of 1 percent and friends, interviewed by 1.1 percent, respectively.

The most important reason for divorce was irresponsible and irrelevant behavior

When the reasons for divorce of at least one divorced individual are examined; the most common reason for divorce in Turkiye is 50.9 percent with irresponsible and irrelevant behavior. This was followed by the fact that 30.2 percent were unable to afford a home economically, and 24.3 percent were disrespectful to their spouses' families.

When divorce causes are examined according to the gender; the most important divorce is the irresponsible and irrelevant behavior of both genders. This rate was 61.5 percent for women and 40.2 percent for men. The most important reasons for divorce after being irresponsible and irrelevant for women were being unable to afford an economic home with 42.6 percent, beating / maltreating with 36.4 percent. The most important reasons for divorce after being irresponsible and irresponsible for males were 24.5 percent of their spouses 'involvement in family relationships and 24 percent disrespectful of their spouses' families.
