UN calls on Israel and Lebanon to honor ceasefire commitments

Deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq emphasized the importance of restraint during a press briefing, stating: "We urge both countries to avoid further action that could raise tensions and further delay the return of residents on both sides to their towns and villages."

The appeal comes amid reports that Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon may exceed the 60-day deadline outlined in the ceasefire agreement. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office issued a statement clarifying that the withdrawal process is conditional on the Lebanese Army's full deployment in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah's withdrawal beyond the Litani River.

The UN reiterated its commitment to facilitating peace under Resolution 1701, which outlines the terms for lasting stability along the Blue Line. Haq noted: "We continue to call for the full implementation of Resolution 1701 as a comprehensive path towards longer-term peace, security, and stability on both sides of the Blue Line."

Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) remain engaged in efforts to ensure the cessation of hostilities and compliance with the agreement.

On the ground, tensions have heightened as the Israeli army reportedly entered the southern Lebanese towns of Aitaroun and Qantara on Friday, destroying properties and a local mosque, according to the Lebanese National News Agency.

The Lebanese agency also reported at least 11 Israeli violations of the November 27, 2024, ceasefire agreement, bringing the total number of breaches to 633 since its implementation.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Israeli military is required to complete its withdrawal from southern Lebanon by Sunday, January 26, 2025. The delays and continued violations have raised concerns about the potential collapse of the fragile ceasefire.

The UN has reaffirmed its support for the full execution of the agreement and urged all parties to uphold their obligations to ensure peace and stability in the region. (ILKHA)
