G7 foreign ministers meet amid growing global crises

The G7 meeting includes representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US. On Monday, ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, and the Arab League’s Secretary-General joined discussions on brokering a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.

The nearly three-year-long war in Ukraine also remained a key topic. Recent escalations include Russia's use of hypersonic ballistic missiles in response to Ukrainian attacks using US and British-supplied long-range weapons. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is scheduled to join talks on Tuesday, coinciding with NATO's emergency discussions in Brussels.

The G7 has been a leading supporter of Ukraine, but uncertainty looms over future US policy. President-elect Trump has signaled a possible shift, criticizing current US financial and military aid to Ukraine and suggesting a swift resolution involving territorial concessions.

Italy, a strong backer of Ukraine, supports defensive aid but restricts offensive weaponry in alignment with its constitutional repudiation of war. (ILKHA)
