Mount Etna eruption forces flight cancellations at Catania Airport

Catania International Airport has been closed since early Thursday, 15 August, due to the eruption, which has resulted in heavy ash clouds affecting visibility.

All flights have been either cancelled or diverted to other airports across Sicily. Airport authorities estimate that operations may resume around 6pm local time. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

The eruption has coincided with Ferragosto, Italy's major public holiday, leading to heightened travel activity and increased impact. The eruption of the Voragine crater has also resulted in nearby towns being covered in black volcanic ash.

This is the second eruption in recent weeks, with the previous one occurring on 4 August. Catania, located on the east coast of Sicily at the base of Mount Etna, is Europe’s most active volcano. The disruption is expected to continue as the situation evolves. (ILKHA)
