In a session held on Wednesday, Kurtulmuş secured 321 votes in the third round of voting, out of the 600 seats in the parliament. His term as the speaker will last for two years.

The election process followed the provisions of the Turkish Constitution, which requires the speaker of parliament to be elected through a secret ballot. Up to four rounds of voting can take place on the same day if necessary.

During the initial two rounds of voting, none of the candidates were able to attain the required two-thirds majority of 400 votes in the 600-seat parliament. However, in the third round, Kurtulmuş received the minimum of 301 votes required for victory.

Among the other candidates, Tekin Bingol from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) obtained 160 votes, while Tulay Hamitogullari Oruc from the Green Left Party (YSP) garnered 51 votes. Mustafa Cihan Pacaci, the candidate from the IYI Party, received 43 votes, and Serafettin Can Atalay from the Türkiye Labor Party (TIP) obtained four votes.

Two candidates, Mustafa Yeneroglu from the Democracy and Progress (DEVA) Party and Serap Yazici Ozbudun from the Gelecek (Future) Party, withdrew from the elections during the third round.

Out of the 584 lawmakers who participated in the voting process, five votes were declared invalid. (ILKHA)
