The earthquake hit near the southern town of Baláo and was more than 65 km (nearly 41 miles) deep, according to the US Geological Survey.
The nation's Risk Management Agency deployed search and rescue teams throughout areas impacted by the earthquake, with structural damage primarily occurring in Azuay, El Oro, Guayas, and Chimborazo provinces.
Fifteen deaths were in El Oro, one in Azuay province, authorities said, adding that at least 381 people were injured. (ILKHA)
