The Supreme Court decided to temporarily block the HDP's treasury assistance account as a precautionary measure.
The decision was taken by a majority of 8 members against 7 members.
Due to the election year, Türkiye’s political parties above 7 percent could receive grants from the treasury.
According to the law, HDP would receive treasury aid of 539 million TL (27 million Euros).
On March 17th, 2021, the state prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Appeals Bekir Şahin filed a lawsuit demanding the closure of the HDP at the Constitutional Court of Turkey due to the party’s alleged organizational links with the PKK.
Şahin also called for a five-year ban from politics for 687 HDP politicians. Amongst the politicians who are to be banned from politics figure all former party leaders including Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ and dozens of former and current members of parliament.
In December 2022, Sahin requested that HDP's bank accounts where it receives funds from the Treasury should “urgently” be blocked for the duration of the case. (ILKHA)
