The accident took place at about 12.15 pm on Friday in Burgrain, near the resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, authorities said.
The Munich-bound train had been quite full at the time it crashed, according to local sources.
The rail line between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberau, north of the accident site, has been completely closed. (ILKHA)
