Colombian voters to go to the polls for presidential elections

Colombia will hold its first round of voting on Sunday to choose the successor to President Ivan Duque, who is ineligible for a second term.

Approximately 39 million Colombians will be summoned to elect the next president and vice-president of the Republic.

Colombian presidents are elected for four-year terms using a two-round system; if no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the first round, a runoff is held between the top two candidates on June 19.

Presidents are limited to a single four-year term and Article 191 of the constitution requires candidates to be Colombian by birth and at least thirty years old.

According to opinion polls, senator Gustavo Petro and center-right former Mayor Federico “Fico” Gutiérrez are the top two contenders, with independent, anti-establishment candidate Rodolfo Hernández gaining ground. (ILKHA)
