All of the victims were passengers in the van which was carrying workers to work, Hungarian police said in a statement.
“Five people died at the scene and more than 10 were injured”, the statement said.
Hungarian state railway (MAV) said that the van entered the level-crossing despite the stop sign showing.
“On Tuesday morning, a passenger train departing from Kiskunfélegyháza to Hódmezővásárhely at 5:50 in Mindszent, at the Déli út railway crossing, collided with a van, and the motor car derailed and overturned. According to the first information, there were 22 passengers on the train, two of them seriously injured and nine more easily injured,” the MAV said in a statement.
“At the time of the accident, the light barrier was working well, the truck was driving in front of the train despite the prohibited signal, and several of the truck’s passengers had died,” it added. (ILKHA)
