“The sentencing of Alexey @navalny runs counter Russia’s international commitments on rule of law & fundamental freedoms. It goes against the verdict of #ECHR, which ruled this case arbitrary and unreasonable. I call for his immediate release,” Borrell tweeted.

On Tuesday, a Moscow court replaced Navalny's three-and-a-half-year suspended sentence with a prison sentence, minus the amount of time he spent under house arrest, meaning he would spend two and half years in a penal colony.

Foreign Secretaries from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany have condemned this ruling. The United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France, the European Union, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, Latvia, and Estonia condemned the actions of the Russian government and demanded the immediate release of Alexei Navalny.
