Lebanese security forces clashed with protesters angry about a coronavirus lockdown, with riot police firing live rounds as demonstrators tried to storm the city's government building.

Security forces used tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the protesters.

The demonstrations were held across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday, including in the capital, Beirut, southern Jiyeh and Tyre, and the eastern Bekaa Valley.

The demonstrations come nearly three weeks into a nationwide coronavirus lockdown that aims to prevent the country’s healthcare sector from collapsing amid a significant increase in the number of new cases and the number of coronavirus-related deaths.

Lebanon has so far recorded more than 285,000 coronavirus cases and 2,477 deaths. (ILKHA)
