French President Emmanuel Macron held a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump after the 3-day G7 summit in Biarritz, France.
Macron says during the summit he was trying to establish the terms for Rouhani and Trump to meet.
"When President Trump was elected, he found the nuclear deal reached with Iran in 2015 inadequate and called for the deal to be renegotiated. Iran has also opposed it. Now, we must take action," Macron said.
Stating that Iran should never have nuclear weapons, Macrons said the region should be stabilized again. "We have taken very important steps in this area."
"We have taken very important steps in this area. I can't disclose the details now, that could undermine the negotiations. But negotiations are ongoing. There will come a moment, and the meeting of Rouhani and Trump will be inevitable. It is necessary to ensure this in the coming weeks or months."
Trump said he would be ready to meet if the conditions were right. He did not specify what those conditions would be but agreed it would be realistic to expect a meeting in the coming weeks. The Iranian and U.S. presidents are both due to attend the UN general assembly in New York in mid-September.
Macron said the Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, flew to Paris on Friday with Iran’s negotiating position. After speaking to Trump and the other G7 leaders at a dinner on Saturday night, the French president decided there was enough convergence to invite Zarif to Biarritz for more talks.
Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif posted a message on Twitter that " Road ahead is difficult. But worth trying," during his contacts in France, while Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said, "I would not hesitate if my meeting with someone is going to solve my country's problem.
