Turkiye Statistical Institute [Turkstat] announced the results of the address-based population registration system. Accordingly, Turkiye's population became 82,003,882 people as of December 31, 2018.
In 2018, the population residing in Turkiye increased by 1 million 193 thousand 357 people compared to the previous year.
Male population was 41 million 139 thousand 980 people and female population was 40 million 863 thousand 902 people. While 50.2% of the total population were males, 49.8% of the total population were females.
Annual population growth rate increased to 14.7? in 2018 from 12.4? in 2017.
The proportion of population residing in province and district centers decreased to 92.3% in 2018 from 92.5% in 2017. The proportion of the population living in towns and villages was 7.7%.
The number of people living in İstanbul increased by 0.3%
The most populated province was İstanbul with 15 million 67 thousand 724 inhabitants, constituting 18.4% of Turkiye's population.
This province was followed by Ankara with 5 million 503 thousand 985 inhabitants, İzmir with 4 million 320 thousand 519 inhabitants, Bursa with 2 million 994 thousand 521 inhabitants and Antalya with 2 million 426 thousand 356 inhabitants, respectively.
The least populated province was Bayburt with 82 thousand 274 inhabitants.
The median age of Turkiye's population increased
The median age of the population in Turkiye increased to 32 in 2018 from 31.7 in 2017. While the median age was 31.4 for males, it was 32.7 for females.
Provinces with the highest median ages were Sinop with 40.3, Balıkesir with 39.9 and Giresun with 39.6, respectively. Provinces with the lowest median ages were Şanlıurfa with 19.8, Şırnak with 20.7 and Ağrı with 21.4.
Population in the working age group increased by 1.4%
The amount of population in the 15-64 working age group increased by 1.4% compared to the previous year. Accordingly, the proportion of working age group became 67.8%; the proportion of children aged 0-14 became 23.4% and the proportion of the population aged 65 and over became 8.8% in 2018.
The number of people per square kilometer increased
The population density, which is the number of persons per square kilometer, increased by 2 persons compared to 2017 and reached 107 in 2018.
The province with the highest number of persons per square kilometer was İstanbul with 2 thousand 900 persons. This province was followed by Kocaeli with 528 persons and İzmir with 360 persons.
Tunceli had the smallest population density same as the past year with 12 persons per square kilometer.
The population density of Konya which has the largest surface area was 57 and the population density of Yalova which has the smallest surface area was 310. (ILKHA)
