Speaking at the parliament, HDP Kocaeli Deputy Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, made a statement on women in prisons, who are pregnant or newly giving birth.

Pointing out there are 72 mothers, including 37 breastfeeding and 35 pregnant, are in prison in Turkiye, Gergerlioğlu stressed it is the violation of the Constitution.

"This is not a political event"

Gergerlioğlu shared the information that two days ago, a 25-day mother was put in Sakarya Ferrizli prison, said: "Put your hand on your heart. The woman who just gave birth was arrested."

Stating that it is against law to arrest a woman who just gave birth, "You can also prosecute her without arrest if you are going to prosecute this woman. Look, this is not a political event. This woman could be your wife or your sister. The AK party government is currently persecuting 72 mothers and babies," he said.

According to the Turkish Constitution, the execution of the sentence shall be suspended for women who are pregnant or 6 months should be passed for the women breastfeeding since the date of birth. (ILKHA)
