The agreement, brokered by the United States, was announced by US President Joe Biden on Tuesday. He praised the decision by both sides to accept the proposal, describing it as "good news."
Biden confirmed that the ceasefire would permanently end hostilities between the two nations. He also stated that the Lebanese Army would regain control of its territory following the implementation of the agreement.
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israel will gradually withdraw its remaining forces and civilians from Lebanese territory over the next 60 days. Both sides will be able to safely return to their homes and begin the process of rebuilding.
While the ceasefire is a significant step toward peace, Biden acknowledged that Israel retains the right to self-defense in the event of any future attacks by Hezbollah or other groups.
The US and France will work to ensure the full implementation of the agreement, but Biden confirmed that no US troops will be deployed to southern Lebanon. (ILKHA)
