In a statement marking the 79th anniversary of the UN, Erdogan emphasized Türkiye's readiness to help ensure that the UN remains a "beacon of hope for humanity," advocating for a global system founded on justice, equality, and solidarity.

"Türkiye is ready to support all efforts to ensure that the UN, which it considers the cornerstone of multilateralism, once again becomes a beacon of hope for humanity," Erdogan said, stressing the importance of eliminating double standards and ensuring justice in international governance.

President Erdogan highlighted Türkiye’s active role within the UN framework, particularly in areas like conflict mediation, peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, migration management, sustainability, and environmental protection. He also praised Türkiye’s hosting of several UN bodies, especially in Istanbul, as a sign of the country's deepening collaboration with the organization.

However, Erdogan was critical of the UN Security Council's recent failures, particularly its inaction in the face of escalating violence in Gaza. "The Security Council is emboldening the perpetrators with its stance and undermining faith in the rules-based international system," he said, referring to the Council's inability to prevent worsening conditions in the region.

Erdogan stressed the urgent need for the Security Council to implement international law to avoid further escalation in the Middle East. He also called for reforms within the UN to enhance the effectiveness of its core organs, including the Security Council, to meet the growing global challenges of hunger, poverty, racism, and Islamophobia.

The Turkish president concluded by paying tribute to the UN personnel who lost their lives in conflict zones, including Gaza, and reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for strengthening the organization’s role in global governance. (ILKHA)
