The Ministry urged that Afghanistan’s UN seat be handed over to the interim government of the Islamic Emirate, stressing the need for its inclusion in international affairs.
Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, Deputy Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said: "The exclusion of the representatives of the Afghan people from Afghanistan’s seat at the UN is an injustice and a violation of their rights. If the UN hands over this seat to the true representatives of Afghanistan, they can responsibly defend the rights of Afghans."
The issue of Afghanistan's representation, along with discussions about the country’s ongoing situation, is expected to be addressed during the 79th session of the General Assembly, which begins on September 23 and will run until September 30. Representatives from more than 190 countries are scheduled to attend the sessions.
Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan's charge d’affaires to the UN, confirmed that he would participate in the session on behalf of Afghanistan. He represents the previous Afghan government as the Islamic Emirate remains unrecognized by the UN member states.
The United States Institute of Peace had previously noted that the interim government's representative would not attend the 79th session due to the lack of official recognition by the UN and its member countries. (ILKHA)
