According to local sources, the drone was conducting espionage activities over Yemeni airspace. This marks the latest in a series of U.S. drone takedowns by Yemeni forces.
Earlier this week, Yemeni air defenses downed another American MQ-9 drone over the Saada province, also claiming that the drone was involved in espionage. Just days prior, a similar incident occurred in Marib province, where Yemeni forces shot down another MQ-9 drone, accusing it of engaging in hostile activities.
The downing of these drones comes amid heightened regional tensions. Yemen has openly expressed support for Palestine in its ongoing conflict with Israel, following the Israeli military's offensive in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2024. The Yemeni Armed Forces have vowed to continue their attacks in solidarity with Palestine, demanding an end to Israel’s ground and air operations in Gaza. The offensive has led to the death of about 41,000 people, with an additional over 100,000 injured.
Yemen’s military leadership has been vocal in their opposition to U.S. and British involvement in the conflict. In December, the United States and Britain announced a coalition to support Israel's military actions, which has drawn sharp criticism from Yemen and other nations in the region. (ILKHA)
