In a press statement, the WHO revealed that among the malnourished children, 3,288 are experiencing acute malnutrition, a condition that can have dire consequences if not addressed promptly. This alarming figure comes from the examination of around 240,000 children in Gaza since the beginning of the year.
To combat this escalating crisis, WHO is supporting four facilities in the enclave dedicated to treating malnutrition, including a center at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, located in northern Gaza. Despite these efforts, the situation remains critical.
A medical source from Kamal Adwan Hospital disclosed that nearly 5,000 children have been diagnosed with symptoms of malnutrition. Of these, one-third are showing signs of severe malnutrition. Disturbingly, 25% of the severely malnourished children have not received intensive treatment due to the advanced stage of their condition, which includes severe complications.
"The influx of cases with complications indicates that this is a critical stage – potentially a prelude to death if immediate intervention is not provided," the medical source warned.
The WHO's report underscores the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid and medical support to address the worsening health crisis among Gaza's children. Without swift action, the situation could lead to a significant rise in preventable child mortality in the region. (ILKHA)
