In a message on X, Yapıcıoğlu commemorated the victims of the August 17, 1999 earthquake and highlighted the need for immediate measures to address the risks posed by future seismic events.
In his message, Yapıcıoğlu expressed deep respect for those who lost their lives in earthquakes across Türkiye and emphasized the continuing vulnerability of many provinces situated in seismic zones. He noted that recent earthquakes, such as the devastating Maraş earthquakes of February 6, 2023, have starkly illustrated both the widespread earthquake risk and the inadequate preparedness for such disasters.
“On the anniversary of the Marmara Earthquake of August 17, 1999, I remember with mercy our brothers and sisters who died in all earthquakes. The recent Maraş earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, painfully revealed both the fact that we have many cities in the earthquake zone and the fact that we are unprepared for earthquakes despite the great destruction. It is urgently necessary to take all necessary measures within the circle of causes. We do not even have a day to lose. May God protect our country from all kinds of disasters," Yapıcıoğlu said.
