During a news conference in Minsk, President Lukashenko reported that the drones, which were suspected to be attack drones, were detected and intercepted by Belarusian air defense systems in the southern part of the country. Lukashenko stated that the drones originated from Ukraine and entered Belarusian airspace without authorization.
"The air defense forces were put on full alert to intercept the incoming targets," Lukashenko said. "There were about a dozen drones. Our planes, a helicopter, and multiple launch rocket systems were activated in response."
Lukashenko also mentioned that radars initially detected more drones that were heading toward the Russian city of Smolensk. However, the drones reportedly changed their course and headed toward Yaroslavl instead.
According to Lukashenko, Belarusian military authorities alerted their Russian counterparts about the approaching threat. All of the drones were reportedly shot down by Russian air defense systems.
