Temperatures are expected to soar to 38°C in some areas, with little relief overnight.

The departments of Aude, Hérault, Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gard, and Pyrénées-Orientales are under the highest level of heatwave alert. Other regions in the south-east are also experiencing high temperatures and remain on lower-level warnings.

While the south-west is forecast to be even hotter, with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C on Saturday, no heatwave warnings have been issued there due to cooler nighttime temperatures. However, the situation could change if conditions worsen.

The heatwave is expected to persist into Sunday, with temperatures remaining high in the south and rising in the north. Paris, which is hosting the Olympics closing ceremony, is forecast to reach 34°C.

Meteorological agency Météo France warns that the situation could deteriorate and is closely monitoring conditions. Local authorities have been advised to implement heatwave plans, including providing assistance to vulnerable populations and ensuring access to cooling centers.

As the heatwave intensifies, residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses. (ILKHA)
